A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party urged an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the president insisted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
