American flight controllers are increasingly seeking additional employment and calling in sick, as they continue to work without pay during the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.

"The controllers are becoming strained," the official told a news outlet on Sunday, as some flights were grounded on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

After the federal closure on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are considered critical staff, were instructed to keep doing their duties without pay.

But some have been missing, causing terminals to stop or slow their flight operations, which has added to delays due to weather and other issues.

Over 3,000 American flights were postponed on Sunday, and the secretary said he anticipates the situation to deteriorate further.

"I observe the stress," Duffy said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had spoken to several controllers to listen to their concerns firsthand.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I work for Uber, can I secure an alternative of earnings to make ends meet?'" he continued.

Duffy further mentioned that on the previous day 22 alerts at airfields indicated travel would be held up due to a shortage of workers - among the peak after the shutdown began.

The American federal closure reached its twenty-sixth day on the weekend, rendering it the second-longest halt in the past.

He has repeatedly warned that flight authorities would reduce the number of aircraft in the air if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he declined to respond directly when questioned if it was safe to travel by air in the US, and instead made a personal plea to controllers.

"I need my staff focused on the flight paths, not on the finances at their households," Duffy stated.
