European Cup Matches This Evening: Manchester City v Bayer Leverkusen & Additional Games

Welcome to a fresh night of exciting Champions League football. 9 fixtures are set for tonight, including three British clubs in action. Chelsea take on Barça in the standout match of the evening, whilst The Magpies visit the French side and Manchester City welcome Bayer Leverkusen.

Current Standings

It's the midway point of the group stage, meaning the table is beginning to form. Each of the six British clubs are presently in the top 12, however there are only two points separating 5th and 16th place, so there's a whiff of uncertainty about the entire situation. Everything is to play for.

Historical Context

The sole past encounter between Marseille and Newcastle was the Europa League semi-final of 2004, won by an emerging superstar from CĂ´te d'Ivoire. Manchester City and Bayer Leverkusen have never met before. Barcelona and Chelsea have a notable history.

Initial Game Reports

Only a single goal during the opening period of the two early games. Samuel Dahl's 6th-minute goal has given Jose Mourinho’s Benfica a one-nil advantage at the Dutch side.

Marseille v Newcastle Preview

Although Newcastle traveled to the south of France coming off their confidence-boosting 2-1 home Premier League win against Manchester City on the weekend, and having defeated Union Saint-Gilloise, Benfica and Bilbao in the Champions League, their sole on the road win since the start of April came in the Belgian capital at Union SG.

Not that Howe was eager to discuss the psychological aspect of this away form issue. “The Champions League is different to Premier League games,” said the manager, whose team are 6th in the European table, with 9 points from a possible twelve and direct qualification to the knockout phase almost within touching distance. “I am not sure if you can compare them.”

We have a separate live blog for Chelsea v Barcelona. Scott Murray, the MBM version of Maradona is handling for that.
