The Battle Royale's Specialized Movement Mechanics Become Widely Accessible This Season

Respawn Entertainment has an exciting surprise in store for Apex Legends players, perfectly timed for the holidays. Enthusiasts of the battle royale's super-slick traversal can rejoice to learn that a new movement mechanic is being implemented when Season 27: Amped goes live on November 4th.

Unveiling The Mantle Boost

Dubbed "Momentum Boosting" by Respawn, this ability gives players a burst of forward momentum when scaling obstacles. According to lead battle royale designer Eric Canavese, Mantle Boosting has unofficially existed of Apex Legends for quite a while, often called as "ledge boosting." But it's no easy feat for casual gamers, and is mainly used by pro gamers in competitive play or esports competitions. In this update, Respawn simplifies the process for everyone to execute these tricky movement boosts.

"This technique existed in the game for a while, but executing it requires skill to perform and a player might not realize it [is in the game] without external guides," Canavese states. "We're adding a visual cue so players can easily see the timing to activate the high-octane traversal skill, making accessible the mechanic and introducing fresh strategies to compete for a much wider base."

Why Make It Accessible

Why make a previously obscure movement quirk available to all players? Lead Legend designer Josh Mohan says the team wants players to experience empowerment — including ones who are inexperienced.

"[The playerbase] is doing advanced techniques like super-gliding and tap-strafes, and we looked around at our competition, looked at what our players are doing, and we said, 'What if we provide some of this power to a broader audience?'" the designer explains. "Because currently, certain advanced [movement] mechanics are somewhat awkward to use — you need to remap your keybinds and hit precise timings. So we said, 'What if we create a more official version?'"

The Amped Update Movement Focus

Mobility is largely the name of the game in Season 27, with Legends the gravity mage, the defensive specialist, and Valkyrie receiving enhancements to maintain them mobile. The cooldown period on Horizon's Gravity Lift has been decreased, and this skill will propel players upward much quicker than before. Rampart's Amped Cover now include overhead protection and capability to provide movement bonuses to allies in range. However it's the high-flying this Legend who's getting the most attention now, with various adjustments applied to enhance her as stronger, quicker, and more lethal.

"I think there's quite a consensus that her moment has arrived," states character developer Ian Holstead. "There's no doubt she was dominant in the past, but due to the addition of other characters, mobility perks, and redeployment tools, it felt like she's not very relevant in current the game. This presented a really great opportunity for us to reexamine multiple elements in her abilities and sort of restore her to her glory days."

Enhancements to the Aerial Legend

To restore her competitive status in current strategies, the developer says Respawn assessed all her skills and introduced significant changes. Her jetpack received improvements, boosting velocity during flight, and this equipment regenerates three times faster, allowing the player to spend more time in the air. Now she won't take damage from her ultimate ability, which was enhanced to tag opponents who are hit from it. Her squad redeploy ability — which launches her entire squad into the air for redeployment or retreat — requires much less time to fire up. Additionally, she gains some new perk choices that players can select to reduce fuel consumption, expand the spread of her Missile Swarm, or accelerate her Skyward Dive activation.

"Valkyrie's equipment now delivers on the pilot experience," Holstead says.

Olympus Improvements

Even the game's only floating arena, Olympus, is getting a movement-friendly facelift, with an extensive redesign that opens up bottlenecks and renders securing elevated positions more manageable. Respawn says the game this update focuses on giving players the tools they need to compete in the competition.

"Essentially, we examined Apex's fundamental nature as a fast-paced FPS," explains lead Legend designer the lead.

The battle royale the Amped season releases November 4th at the specified times.
