Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
